End of the road for Rubens Barrichello ?

Brazilian Grand Prix - Saturday

Rubens Barrichello has had an illustrious formula one career, Wikipedia tells me that he is the eight highest point scorer ever in formula one. Now that is a big deal. I still remember his feisty driving in his early days with Jordan and Stewart.

He then moved to the Ferrari formula one team. He had a successful stint at Ferrari but was essentially the number 2 driver for the team, always shadowing Michael Schumacher.

2002 Austrian GP - Barrichello Slowing down

How can we ever forget the 2002 Austrian Grand Prix, his number 2 status was confirmed when he was asked to hold off on the throttle to let Michael Schumacher go past and win the race. Ofcourse this move was criticized very heavily and Michael himself handed over the winner trophy and podium position to Rubens Barrichello who was in tears.

After his stint in Ferrari, Barrichello moved to Honda  becoming teammates with then novice Jenson Button. He was however outpaced by Button at most races in his seasons at the Honda formula one team. He was never really able to find his footing in the team and soon the Honda formula one team shut shop and the team was bought over by Ross Brawn and rechristened Brawn GP.

This would be Barrichello’s phoenix moment, using some clever rule interpretations, Brawn GP was able to secure the fastest car on the grid, but still Barrichello was behind Button and couldn’t outpace him for most of the season. He however finished third in the championship forcing critics to think that he may still have something in him. But that feeling was shortlived.

Its been downhill since then, he joined the Williams F1 team after Brawn and was a dud. And now the Williams formula one team has decided to replace him with Bruno Senna leaving Rubens Barrichello without a formula one seat for the 1st time in many many years.

There were rumours of Barrichello looking around at other formula one teams but then news reports came out confirming that he would be testing in Indy. Most probably this is the end of the road for the Brazilian, much like Juan Pablo Montoya who joined NASCAR after his formula one stint never to come back.

I remember growing up playing the formula one games on my friend’s PS3, the Monaco circuit would be our favourite with damage on. That would be one difficult race to win. Well since that time I have always loved the official formula one games.

Press now quotes random former teammate of Michael Schumacher to further downgrade him

leave a comment

Michael Schumacher Mercedes

If you thought my previous report about the press deliberately targeting Michael Schumacher was a figment of my imagination, here is some proof to go along with it. The Independent news paper has come out with a serious of comments by some ‘former teammate’ of Michael Schumacher who prefers to remain anonymous.

It cant only be me who thinks that the timing of these comments and the nature of comments coming from an anonymous teammate are suspicious.  There seems to be a sustained and deliberate attempt to malign Michael Schumacher and to put doubts into his mind as to his return to the sport of formula one. One can imagine how Michael Schumacher would feel after reading all the nonsense being written about him.

The comments first :

“I can tell you, he was always very vulnerable when he lost, whenever I beat him; it was as if he needed a cuddle afterwards.”

“You can see his head has dropped after four races in which Rosberg has been quicker; he just isn’t used to that. He is the kind of guy who even when we were at the Madonna di Campiglia pre-season skiing publicity event with Ferrari in the old days, he had to be the fastest. And if he wasn’t, he would keep demanding another go until he was. That’s how driven he used to be.

“After the beating he got on Sunday, in conditions in which the old Michael Schumacher excelled, I don’t think he’ll ever come back to his old level.”

Now who could this teammate be : Johhny Herbert ? Eddie Irvine ? Rubens Barrichello ?

Clearly including Johhny Herbert in this discussion would be an insult to this discussion, I feel the same about Eddie Irvine, but he seems to be a likely suspect. Eddie Irvine was Schumacher’s teammate from the 1996 season, round about the time I started watching formula one. Wikipedia tells me : In 1996 Schumacher had 59 points and 3 wins, against Irvine’s 11 points and no wins. He retired for 8 races in a row and 10 out of 16 races in total. In 1997, not counting Schumacher’s disqualification from the world championship, the German had 78 points and 5 wins, against Irvine’s 24 points and, again, no wins (6/17 retirements).

The only time the Irishman came even close to winning the championship was in 1999 when my brother had predicted Michael Schumacher would have an accident at the Silverstone grand prix (and he did). Mika Salo replaced him for most of the season and Eddie Irvine finally had little competition from within the team. But he was unable to win again with Michael Schumacher returning for the Japanese Grand Prix and beating the pulp out of him and Mika Hakkinen taking the title by finishing ahead of Irvine.

So the conclusion is that if Eddie Irvine made such comments, its totally understandable. Come to think of it , anyone who was beaten by Irvine would need some cuddling, but very few needed it as the stats clearly show.

I save the discussion on Rubens Barrichello for another day, he could be the ‘masked’ interviewee especially with the closeness Michael sometimes showed for Felipe Massa in his advisory role for Ferrari , Barrichello apparently was treated like a step child by both Ferrari and Michael Schumacher while he was still there and Massa got advice even after Michael retired.

Sebastien Vettel wins the 2010 Malaysian Grand Prix , Red Bull 1-2 with Mercedes GP completing the podium

one comment

Nico Rosberg 3rd malaysian grand prix 2010

Apologies for no photo of the winning driver, apparently Red Bull’s media department is not approving our application to use their photos for editorial purposes.

Red Bull really did give Sebastien Vettel and Mark Webber wings with the duo grabbing a 1-2 at the 2010 formula one Malaysian Grand Prix. Nico Rosberg was third for the Mercedes GP formula one team (erstwhile Brawn GP) while his teammate Michael Schumacher was unlucky yet again as a nut came off his car’s wheel and he was forced to retire. Before that Michael Schumacher in a strong start had made up 2 places.

Sebastien Vettel proved that if you are good enough and if you drive good enough, victory will come and luck factor will diminish. After 2 unlucky races, Malaysia proved to be third time lucky.

Lewis Hamilton was another the start performer of the day though, the Briton made his way up from 20th on the grid to sixth place. His teammate Jenson Button was 8th at the finish line.

Meanwhile Spaniard and Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso called the Malaysian Grand Prix the toughest race of his life. He suffered a gearbox problem and apparently no clutch in the race.

“Right from the start things went wrong. On the formation lap, my gearbox broke, and I had no clutch during the race,” Fernando Alonso said.

“So I had to brake in a weird way. I had to first gear down and then push the throttle hard so it would engage the gear for that corner.

“So it was probably the hardest race of my whole life in terms of driving, because I had to improvise for every corner.
