Stepneygate : Nigel Stepney strikes back at Ferrari

Recent polls have suggested that most formula one fans feel that McLaren had infact cheated to get ahead of Ferrari and deserve to be penalised. McLaren fans too are pretty unhappy with the way McLaren seems to be playing. But the stepneygate espionage saga just got murkier. Its Nigel Stepney’s turn to hit back, in a move that appears to have the motive of getting attention off himself, he has accused the Ferrari formula one team of stalking him and spying on him.

The Briton has accused Ferrari of sending detectives and spies on him which resulted in some ‘high speed chases’ in Italy. It seems that his lawyer might be adding unnecessary twists to his case. Moreover his lawyer also says that Nigel Stepney might also help identify people in Ferrari formula one who might have spied on Ferrari and handed over the classified documents to Mike Coughlan and Trudy Coughlan. Unfortunately for them, photocopy shop owners are Ferrari fans too
Nigel’s lawyer Sonia Bartolini was quoted as saying :
“At the right time we’ll draw our conclusions. At the moment we’re trying to trace the car plates to the subjects that followed Stepney, and then we’ll file a complaint.
“Obviously, if it is confirmed that Ferrari are behind this, it would be very serious. It’s one thing to keep an employee under control at the workplace, but it’s quite another to spy on him at his home and to follow him at night.
“If that was the case, the Maranello (Ferrari formula one team) people will be called to answer for it in court.”
Meanwhile McLaren will only make a statement in court it seems. If convicted of cheating, the McLaren team can be docked points or disqualified from the championship. The Honda F1 team have meanwhile been spared it seems. There were hints of Honda formula one team’s involvement in the scandal too, but it seems the FIA has ignored it.
