F1 notes – By Abhimanyu
Missing Michael
It seems that I am not the only one missing Michael Schumacher on the race track, for team Ferrari??(tm)s lackluster performance over the past 3 weekends shows that they are missing the Schumi magic more than anyone else. Schumacher had this uncanny knack of pulling out an extra half second when most needed, especially during qualifying, where Ferrari has lost the plot this summer. Last year Ferrari was unable to gain momentum at the beginning of the season and it cost them the championship, and this season could be a repeat. Here is hoping that Todt & Co. pull themselves up during the European leg and recapture lost ground.
F1 Commentary in India
Well, its high time ESPNStar took the sport seriously in Asia and got some good commentators, for the highly biased and inaccurate commentary spoils the whole fun of watching F1. Chris Goodwin, who is also a test driver for McLaren, mixes up his two jobs and tends to defend McLaren on every occasion. For example, when asked about the recent war of words between Alonso and Hamilton, he fended the question by saying that it??(tm)s all fuelled by the media who keep misquoting the two drivers. Now the whole F1 world knows that it??(tm)s a full out war between the two, as was on display during the USGP where a frustrated Alonso took the wrong line at the end of one of the laps. Coming to Stephen Slater, well the less said the better. His commentary is full of errors which are not restricted to his limited tehnical knowledge, and Goodwin has to keep correcting him every now and then. Wake up ESPNStar!
An Indian GP Sceptic
According to recent news reports, F1 is coming to India in 2009. But I am highly skeptical of the recent developments, especially since the IOA is involved. The IOA, as any other sports governing body in India, is ruled by some old political horses, primarily Suresh Kalmadi. The body is pretty inefficient with many charges of corruption and bureaucratic delay pointed at them time and again. September 30, 2007 is supposed to be the deadline for signing a contract with Bernie Ecclestone along with completing other formailites, and a lot of work has to be done by then. In plain and simple terms, it would be incredible if the IOA is able to pull this one off.
And what happened to the India Gate street race hullabaloo? Kalmadi has silently killed it and now the track is going to be designed by… yes you guessed it! Tilke Associates. Its planned to be located at the outskirts of the capital.
