Its Official : Tilke wants Rajpath to be Indian formula one track

If anyone here in India checked out the newspaper it has details of the meeting of German Architect Herman Tilke with Delhi’s Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. Hot on the heels of the visit by Ralf Schumacher to New Delhi, Herman Tilke was in town. Apparently he was invited by Vijay Mallya and the Kingfisher group. Here is what Herman Tilke said
“We’d like to position New Delhi as a formula one street circuit with the track moving around India Gate down to Rajendra Prasad road. We think its a perfect track for formula one racing. We have already met the Delhi CM once and will be meeting her again to further discuss the matter (Indian Formula One Grand Prix).”
Another option for the f1 track is a 200 acre plot near Noida which falls under the National Capital Region of Delhi.
Also the track will need an initial investment of 100-120 million USD, but the first race itself is expected to generate around 180-200 million USD in formula one revenue. For photos of India Gate and the proposed track , see our previous post on the proposed Indian F1 GP circuit :

Wow, looks like India is the next big thing on the F1 circuit. Street circuits are immensely popular everywhere, and its good that New Delhi will be getting one for the Indian formula one grand prix.

The great thing is that Delhi is my home-town and India Gate is a 15-minute drive.I hope it happens though I am thinking over and over again there might be security issues.

Call me a pessimist, but I think the emissions from Formula One might damage the old buldings at Rajpath… but then, we already have lots of traffic in that area anyway
On a lighter note, a car might just crash into the India Gate!

I believe that formula one has very strict emission norms, and also its not like cars are not already allowed near India Gate.
A car crashing into India Gate, that will start a blame game, i believe it will be tyre walled

As it is the traffic situation in Delhi is pathetic, with the advent of F-1, things will only become worse since a lot of roads will be blocked for the races.
