Williams not happy with ‘customer cars’
Frank Williams made it very clear that customer cars , which basically means one manufacturer making a chasis and selling it to another team, will signal the end of formula one as we know it. The concorde agreement which is valid till this season says that you must be a constructor to enter. But it seems that Max Mosely is hell bent on changing the rules to make the sport more profitable for the B-grade teams who dont have the required expertise to build their own competitive chasis. This year two teams are said to be using customer chasis in formula one. Super Aguri will use Honda’s last year formula one car and the Scuderia Toro Rosso is said to be copying the Red Bull RB3 f1 car. Frank Williams said the the FIA must tell if the formula one rules are being changed as the formula one constructors championship is very dear to all.
David Richards of Prodrive formula one team which joins the grid in 2008 meanwhile had to say this :
“Frank is talking this up for one reason only,”
“He can see that his business model of employing 600 people to build a racing car without manufacturer assistance , won’t stack up in the future.
“We need teams at the back given the same cars as Ferrari and fielding promising young drivers. That’s the spectacle we want to see.”
Ofcourse we know David just wants to enter F1 with minimum investment unlike his predecessors who had to make huge initial investments.
